The overall objective of criminal policy is to reduce crime and increase people’s security.
The Swedish Prosecution Authority shall contribute towards achieving this objective by ensuring that the perpetrators of the crimes are called to account for their actions in a legally correct and effective way. The aim is that there shall be an increase in the number of suspects brought before the court. The prosecutor serves as an important link in the legal chain – police, prosecution, law court and correctional treatment. It is the prosecutor who, within the framework of the law, determines whether or not a case shall be brought, and it is the prosecutor who conducts the preliminary investigations and represents the State in the court of law.
The various authorities in the legal chain are dependent on each others’ work, and close co-operation between the parties concerned is therefore necessary.
